For the third season in succession, Cnoc Mhuire, Granard are through to the Leinster Vocational Schools U-16 ‘A’ Football Championship Final following a fine victory over St. Peter’s, Dunboyne at the St. Loman’s GAA 3G pitch in Mullingar on Thursday last.

Cnoc Mhuire played against the wind in the first half and despite dominating possession were five points down at the break, 1-4 to 0-2 with the points coming from Aaron Brady and Niall McGahern.

The Granard school needed a good start to the second half and done just that with points from Aaron Brady and a massive long range effort from Barry McKiernan, followed in the 35th minute by the decisive score of the game when centre-half-forward Mark Kiernan got on the end of a long diagonal pass from McKiernan to steer the ball into the net.

This crucial goal gave Granard great confidence as they registered further points from Russell Brady (2), Jayson Matthews and Mark Kiernan (2) to establish a tight grip on the game.

Dunboyne never gave up and added two points (frees) to their tally but Cnoc Mhuire got the final score of the game through Shane Sheils who slotted over a wonderful long range effort.

This was a very strong team performance with the full-back-line of Shane McGarry, Luke Meehan and James Mooney being particularly dominant in their sector. In the half-back-line Cian Brady and Conor Brady drove the team on at all times while the midfield pairing of Conor Mallon and Barry McKiernan comfortably got the better of their opponents.

Cnoc Mhuire played Gallen CS, Ferbane in the final yesterday (Tuesday) in their quest to complete a three-in-a-row of U-16 provincial titles.
