GAA notes

KILLOE YOUNG EMMETS: We completed what must be regarded as the greatest year in history of the Club when winning the Leader Cup Final with a powerful victory over Longford Slashers at Pearse Park on Sunday last. Killoe, with the Senior and Under 21 Championship titles already under their belts, came into this game as clear favourites but Slashers weren’t there to make up the numbers and were determined to turn the tables of their County Final conquerors.

While Killoe had periods of domination in the first half they missed quite a few scoring chances and Slashers were well in touch at the break, only trailing by a point. Early in the second half Slashers took the game to Young Emmets and gained the advantage on the scoreboard when scoring a well taken goal to put the Town side ahead by two points. This was a wake up call for Killoe who set about dismantling the Slashers defence and scored a total of 2-5 without reply to put the issue beyond doubt. Killoe ran out easy winners with a final score of 3-11 to 1-7. Congratulations to all the players and also the management team: Tommy McCormack, Terry McCormack and John Bracken. Well done to referee Michael Flynn, Ballymore on his first major final. The Killoe club has enjoyed a fantastic season winning no less that 19 titles this year: 3 Senior, 10 Minor (U10 to U18) 3 Schools and 3 Ladies. Great credit to those over the past number of years who have worked so hard to make all this possible and the Club acknowledges and thank all those who contributed. A word of thanks also to MB Coy, Longford, Begleys Pub and The Olde Forge who provided the players, management and supporters with food on a number of occasions after games this year. We thank our main sponsor Paul Rowley, Admore, New York and also special thanks to Cullyfad Community Club for sponsoring Socks and Togs for the Senior Team. Thanks also to Frank Kiernan, Kiernan Steel for sponsoring training kits for our Minor Team. Shane Cox and Niall Flood also participated in these sessions and remain on the fringes of the main panel and could receive a call up at any time. We extend sympathy to the families of Jack Leonard and Tommy Eivers who passed away recently. Both were past pupils of Legan and Ballycloghan National Schools respectively. May they rest in peace.
