Cnoc Mhuire, Granard U-14 footballers are through to the North Leinster Post-Primary Schools ‘C’ Championship Final following a recent hard fought win over the title holders Bush P.P., Dundalk at a windswept Dunganny grounds, Co Meath.
With the aid of a very strong wind in the first half, Bush P.P. Had to be content with a slender 1-6 to 1-3 lead at the break with their goal coming just before the break. A speculative shot deceived the Cnoc Mhuire keeper Liam Sheridan and bounced off his hands against the underside of the crossbar and while Sheridan recovered quickly to gather the ball, the referee awarded a goal to the Dundalk side. This was particularly hard on Sheridan, who had produced three excellent saves throughout the first half.
The Granard side worked really hard against the wind led by the efforts of the industrious PJ Masterson and the boundless energy of Cian Madden. Ruairi Harkin fired home a well worked goal while the Cnoc Mhuire points in the first half came from Dylan Logan.
Cnoc Mhuire dominated most of the second half in adding the emphatic total of 3-5 to their tally with Harkin finding the back of the net again in the early stages of the second half to leave the sides all square.
Although Bush P.P. Regained the lead with a brace of points from frees, Cnoc Mhuire were soon back on level terms through a score apiece from Logan and Oisin Pierson and the ding-dong battle continued as the Dundalk side went back in front.
But Cnoc Mhuire hit back with a crucial goal from Paul Leonard, who shot to the net from a very tight angle. Building on this momentum the Granard school finished with a flourish and a brilliantly taken point from James Smith emphasised their superiority. The game was wrapped up when a superb crossfield pass from Oisin Pierson was collected by Dylan Logan who scored the decisive fourth goal to put the issue beyond all doubt.
Cnoc Mhuire were well served by a team effort that was best exemplified in the fine performances of Liam Sheridan, P.J Masterson, Cian Madden, Dylan Logan and Ruairi Harkin.
