DROMARD: On Sunday last our seniors travelled to Oliver Lynch Park to take on Abbeylara in the Leader Cup quarter-final. Pitch conditions were very good but the game was played in a constant drizzle While scores were at a premium both sides showed plenty of spirit contributing to an entertaining hour’s football. A pointed free from James Martin following a foul on Peter Reynolds opened the scoring. A brace of points from play from the boot of Robbie Smyth edged the home side into the lead. Another converted James Martin free after Ronan Mc Entire was fouled levelled matters at 2 pts apiece. This was the way the scoreline remained until half-time. Neither team were able to pull away in a hard fought second half. An opportunist point from play from Francis McGee moved us into the lead but this was quickly cancelled out by a point response from Abbeylara. A point from play from team captain James Martin put us in front and again Abbeylara landed an equaliser. As full-time drew near up popped Gary Maguire to calmly knock over what proved to be the winning point from play. While Abbeylara pushed hard for an equaliser our defence were able to withstand this pressure and hold out for the win. Team and scorers: Damien Sheridan, Paul McGee, Padraig McNerney, David Pettit, John Sheridan, Diarmuid Masterson, Peter Reynolds, Bernard Sheridan, James Mimnagh, Emmet Masterson, Ronan McEntire, Cian Mimnagh, James Martin (0-3) 2 frees, Noel Reynolds, Francis McGee (0-1). Subs used: Cathal Conefrey, Declan Mimnagh, Gary Maguire (0-1), Peter Masterson. Other subs available on the day were Gavin Mc Nerney, Conor Kiernan and Dermot Reilly. The semi-final will take place this Wednesday December 5th away to Longford Slashers at 8.15pm. Longford Ladies County Board held their AGM in Glennon Brothers Pearse Park on Wednesday November 28th last with a large crowd in attendance. There was a presentation first from the Carers Association in how raising money for them can help our club and county board and the new executive will discuss their ideas in due course and advise. In the Chairperson’s and Secretary’s speeches everyone was thanked for their co-operation during 2012. The Ladies clubs who put in such an amount of hard work, their players and executives were thanked because that is whom the Executive is working for. Equally to the outgoing Executive. Particular praise was given to Chairman of Longford GAA, Pat Cahill and Co. Secretary Peter O’ Reilly who were so helpful during 2012, allowing Longford Ladies use of Glennon Brothers Pearse Park for matches and meetings, to all the GAA clubs that allowed us access during the year for our training, matches and various programmes. Special mention was given to Andy Egan and Shroid GFC for their great help during 2012. The referees were praised for doing a fine job, even though everyone gives out - without the referee there would be no games, while it is an unthankful job and every one of them are appreciated, eventually. There is also a bag pack organised in Dunnes Stores just before Christmas so we ask everyone for a hand out at that. We have finished our schedule of matches, ahead of the programme which is fantastic given the large number of matches played in all our various competitons and ages groups during 2012. As Christmas comes closer into view it is now a time of rest for our players. As I finish my stint as PRO may I wish each and everyone a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
