Longford hurlers beaten by Fermanagh

While the Longford hurlers were beaten by Fermanagh in their first competitive fixture under new manager Frank Browne at Brewster Park in Enniskillen on Saturday evening last, they will get another chance in the Lory Meagher Cup qualifier against the losers of the Leitrim and Warwickshire Round 2 clash.

The formbook clearly suggests that neighbouring rivals Leitrim will be the probable opponents in the Round 3 clash on Saturday week, May 19th, and Longford can gain some encouragement from the performance against Fermanagh in what was a damage limitation exercise.

Many regulars from previous seasons are currently missing, leaving manager Frank Browne to work with a limited squad of players, but at least Longford made it difficult for Fermanagh in the first half and only trailed by four points at the break, 0-9 to 0-5.

All the Longford scores in the first half came from frees converted by midfielder Eoin Donnellan and the accurate Rathcline player accounted for the entire Longford tally (all frees) during the course of the game.

Donnellan’s goal in the second half came direct from a free to give Longford a glimmer of hope but the Division 3B National League champions Fermanagh were realistically never in any danger of suffering a shock defeat and had the emphatic margin of eleven points to spare at the final whistle with impressive midfielder Ryan Bogue their top scorer with 0-9 (one from play) to his credit.
