It was a beautiful morning in Lanesboro last Thursday August 30, as the junior infants stepped out of their family cars and ventured into the halls of Scoil Mhuire Gan Smal. It was their first day at school and excitement had been building since early morning.

“They are a small bit scared this morning,” said Kamila Malkowska, Lanesboro, as she watched her two daughters, Malwina (5) and Paulina (6), make their way to the school’s front door.

The Breslin household in Lanesboro had the same experience, according to Amanda Breslin, mother of Chloe (4).

“She was a little bit nervous but it really is a very exciting day for her,” she said.

Mary O’Brien told of her son, Ronan Lyons’ (5), experience.

“He is the youngest of five so it was a very busy morning for all of us,” said the Lanesboro mother. “He knows the run now, from the older children. But he’s happy to be here today – he’s a big boy now.”

At the Collins’ home in Kilrooskey, the atmosphere was filled with excitement. Teresa, mother to four-year-old Myah, said the house had been in “pandemonium”.

“She was at playschool last year so that gave her some routine. It’s exciting for her this morning though,” said Mrs Collins.
