Massage and healing at Bodytherapy Studio, Longford

When it comes to providing the people of this county with a more holistic approach to their overall health and well-being, massage therapist, Juraj Holkovic’s Bodytherapy Studio at 33, Ballymahon Street, Longford is quite simply the ‘in’ place in town to be.

The Slovakian national’s business has been based along Longford town’s main thoroughfare for the past three years and clients include professionals, local GAA stars and many more.

“It is all about massage and healing for tired bodies,” Juraj told the Leader last week. “The aim is prevention of illness; 40% of what I do is based around relaxation while 60% centres on back problems. There are many instances where I refer people on to chiropractors and physiotherapists as well.”

Holkovic wasn’t always a healing man, as they say. In his native Slovakia he trained to become a teacher after concluding his second level education. Eight years ago he arrived in Ireland “to earn some money”, as he said himself, and after working in various aspects of the agricultural and forestry industries, found himself beginning to veer in a different direction. “I moved back to Slovakia in 2008 and started training in massage; now I am studying Chinese Medicine and specialising in Acupuncture,” Juraj continued. “I find that people still regard massage therapy as a bit of a luxury and this is most certainly not the case. Massage therapy is a preventative method of illness and also assists in shoulder, back and neck strain. People really need to become more aware, of the fact, that their health is their own responsibility and that massage therapy can prevent illness taking hold.”

The popular massage therapist went on to say that it was vital for people to engage in massage therapy when their health was at its best, because its preventative nature worked “much better that way”. “When people come to me when they are feeling unwell, it takes much longer for the therapy to work,” he added. “During massage therapy, I also advise people about lifestyle, diet and stress management; it is pointless being stressed and worried about things that we have no control over – it would be great if people realised that as well.”
