‘Cashel’s star forward in bid to clinch bachelor of the Year title

It has been a busy couple of weeks for Newtowncashel’s star forward Kieran Mulvihill. What with Celebrity Bainisteoir, the build up to side’s clash in the Intermediate Final against Granard on September 30 and a nomination for Stellar Magazine’s Bachelor of the Year 2012 award, the 27-year-old writer has found himself in popular demand in recent times.

However, it could be suggested that Mulvihill’s Bachelor of the Year nomination was a stroke of luck that happened to bestow itself upon him, because, it was the ‘Cashel side’s celebrity bainisteoir, Roz Purcell who encouraged him to go forward and position himself where he may very well clinch that prestigious accolade. Once nominated, it wasn’t long before the local lad was short-listed to the final selection process. “I was kind of lucky really, because Roz is involved with Stellar Magazine and it was she who put me forward in the competition,” he told the Leader on Monday. “I headed up to Dublin for a day and was presented with a questionnaire which consisted of about 20 or so questions that I had to answer and then we headed over to Kelly’s Hotel for a photo shoot.”

There are 20 participants from all over the country in the contest and the winner will be decided by the public through text voting. The winner will be announced on October 11 and all participants will be invited to a celebratory bash in Dublin on the night.

But with all the hype in the picturesque south Longford parish with the upcoming final and Celebrity Bainisteoir, is the local star forward taking everything in his stride? “Ah the Bachelor of the Year Award is actually a bit of fun really and yes there has been a few smart comments from the lads on the team all right, but generally speaking everyone is being very supportive; it’s a bit of craic and I’m enjoying it,” Mulvihill laughed. “At the moment I am trying to do a bit of writing for theatre, but in reality there is a lot going on, so I have had to put the writing on the back burner so to speak; well at least until after the intermediate clash with Granard next week which I believe ‘Cashel has every chance of winning.”
