Danger posed by derelict school in Cloontuskert highlighted

Tarmonbarry native, Cllr Tom Crosby has asked that Roscommon County Council and Bord na Móna join forces to ensure that the derelict school building at Cloontuskert is demolished as soon as possible.

“Last Thursday morning part of the roof on this unused derelict building collapsed in on the structure,” Cllr Crosby fumed, adding that the building was at the heart of housing development in the scenic village.

“The structure also forms part of  adjacent residential properties and is now in an extremely dangerous condition as the remaining part of the roof is about to collapse. There are concerns that the entire structure could collapse and endanger the lives of a family whose gable wall adjoins the school building.”

The Mayor of Roscommon went on to say that the family close by were “living in fear and that serious decay and dampness was also affecting their home.  “When part of the roof collapsed, the windows were smashed and now this derelict property is accessible to children who will not realise the dangers,”

Cllr Crosby stressed. “I did get confirmation from the council that it would board up the windows and doors as a temporary precaution, but this simply does not go far enough. I have written to both the local authority and Bord Na Móna to outline to them the state of this property and the danger that it now poses.”
