County Longford expected to miss out on adverse weather conditions over the coming days

While Met Eireann has issued a severe weather warning for at least 12 counties across the country in the coming days, it appears that Longford and Cavan will miss out on the worst of the adverse conditions. Both counties are set to avoid the heavy snowfall and blizzard-like conditions that are expected to descend on the country until Thursday. There will however, be a drop in temperatures throughout both counties, with minus degress at night that will lead to forst and icy roads acrosss the region.

As Friday approaches it is expected to become much milder and with it the possibility of an end to the cold and frosty weather, as the spring freshness brings with it a little more warmth and indeed drier conditions all round.

Between three and eight centimetres of snow is expected to fall in counties Dublin, Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Louth, Wexford, Wicklow, Meath, Donegal, Mayo, Cork, Kerry, Tipperary and Waterford over the next two or three days and heavy snowfall with blizzard like conditions is expected to continue until Thursday night. Snow will lie at lower levels as well as on high ground, and it is expected to reach peak levels in the coastal counties of Leinster.

Met Eireann also warned of very windy conditions towards the end of the week and this will make for the blizzard like conditions during snow showers.

Gardaí are urging drivers, cyclists and pedestrians in Co Longford - despite the county appearing to be on the milder scale weather wise - to be extra careful on the roads and are reminding people across the county to drop in on eldery neigbours and friends to ensure that they have enough fuel for heating and are okay health wise.

While most routes locally are dry, the Road Safety Authority (RSA) has warned all drivers to exercise caution as black ice has been reported in some parts.
