Colmcille man crowned Best Apprentice

North Longford native, Alan McKeon scooped a top accolade last week after he was selected Best SIMI Automobile Apprentice 2012.
McKeon who hails from Colmcille was pronounced the winner at the 55th annual National Skills Championships which was hosted by Cork Institute of Technology last week. Five competitors, including McKeon were chosen from around the country and subsequently put through a gruelling three days of rigorous testing by the panel of expert examiners.
“I can’t believe it, all of the other competitors were so talented,” Mr McKeon said, following the announcement. The talented north Longford youth has been working alongside his father Hugh since he first started his apprenticeship in the family business. He will now go forward to represent Ireland at the WorldSkills event which will take place in the coming months.
According to SIMI, “Ireland’s Automobile Apprentices have had an outstanding record of success in the WorldSkills competition having won four gold and one bronze medal in recent years”.
