Cnoc Mhuire, Granard
International Literacy Day: To celebrate World Literacy Day on March 6th, the students and staff of Cnoc Mhuire Secondary School participated in a number of events to promote literacy in our school. The first year students were involved in a ‘Spelling Bee’ during the morning. All students thoroughly enjoyed this activity and displayed impressive spelling skills. Congratulations to David Mellor, Mel Brady, Gary Murtagh, Caolan O’Reilly and Louise Kelly from Ms Delaney’s class who beat off stiff competition and scooped top prize. After lunch we had a ‘Drop Everything and Read’ session, where all students and staff were asked to stop what they were doing and pick up a book for twenty minutes. The day proved a great success. Many thanks to all the teachers involved in organising and running the activities.
Seachtain na Gaeilge: This week is Seachtain na Gaeilge in Cnoc Mhuire. This annual event is always a huge success in our school with students and staff emersing themselves in ‘An Cultúr Gaelach’ The corridors were alive with the ‘cúpla focal’ and students and staff participated in a wide range of events. These events includ a comórtas póstaeir (Poster Competition), Tráth na gCeist (Table Quiz), cúpla céilí (a selection of Ceilí’s), ceolchoirm (Concert) agus tóraíocht taisce (treasure hunt) . Well done to all concerned and many thanks to all the teachers for organising and participating in the various events. More details next week.
Fr McGee Cup Champions: Well done to Mr Carroll and the senior boys who beat St. Mel’s in the Fr McGee cup on Thursday last. The final score was an impressive 1-16- 1-9. 2013 has been an impressive year on the sports field for Cnoc Mhuire. Well done to Mr Carroll and all the lads on this fantastic victory for Cnoc Mhuire. Longford County Enterprise Competition: Well done to all the groups who travelled to Longford recently to participate in the County Enterprise Competition. Shamróg, an Irish Language teaching resource and Coola Boola Bakery represented us and were commended for their innovation and work in the preparation of the projects. Congratulations to Coola Boola Bakery who won the ‘Best Interview Award’ on the day. Many thanks to Ms Stephens for preparing the students for this competition.
U-14 Blitz: Well done to Mr Swaine and the U-14 boys who won all five matches in a recent blitz. The team demonstrated great talen ton the pitch and it is very evident that the tradition of quality Gaelic football is set to continue in our school.
1st and 2nd Year Girls Basketball: Ms Geoghegan and her basketball teams travelled to Monaghan recently. All students did their best and played some very skilful basketball. There was mixed results on the day but it is clear that the future of basketball in our school is in safe hands.
Parent Teacher Meeting: The second year parent teacher competition takes place today (Wednesday) from 4.15pm – 6.45pm. This is a valuable opportunity for parents to meet with teachers to discuss their child’s progress to date.
Longford U-21s: Well done to all our past pupils on the Longford panel who had an impressive win over Dublin recently.
