Call for council to crack down on illegal dumping

Councillors have expressed fury over revelations a building contractor employed by Longford Local Authorities may be responsible for illegally dumping disused tarmac at a well known litter 'blackspot' in Longford town.

Councillors have expressed fury over revelations a building contractor employed by Longford Local Authorities may be responsible for illegally dumping disused tarmac at a well known litter 'blackspot' in Longford town.

A contractor who carried out work on behalf of Longford local authorities should be “blacklisted” following the discovery of unwanted tarmac clippings in a known litter blackspot.

That was the message delivered by an overwhelming majority of councillors at last week’s meeting of Longford Town Council on foot of a presentation delivered by Longford Tidy Towns Association.

Secretary Paul Marsden told of how he found the a large quantity of disused material in the Templemichael Terrace area of town during the course of an early morning cycle.

Mr Marsden also said Tidy Towns volunteers retrieved household waste such as potato skins and up to 800 beer cans on a previous clean up of the site.

Three other locations were also causing the association problems, the meeting heard - the back of Annaly Park, Longford’s Mastertech Industrial Estate and Palace Crescent.

Cllr Tony Flaherty said the only way to counteract the situation was by the council handing down financial penalties to those responsible.

“It is illegal dumping at the end of the day and this is being done by people we (Longford Town Council) are paying to do a job. All it takes is for one person to be made an example of,” he said.

The rear of Templemichael is like the Third World. The front has dumpeduntaxed cars littering it. The house were a poor women was murdered is now half burnt with it's door hanging open awaiting even more evil deeds to be done in it. Where are the Gardai? Where are the Council?

Dumping around certain estates such as Ardnacassa are awful.I dont count the times when my husband and I (we own a house in this estate, with many many council houses around us) were picking litter from the street and green areas. Its is just a time to do something about it. Not mentioning the forests around Longford. My neighbour goes out with dog alot and said about amount of rubbish in those forests!!!!. Introduction of litter bins outside of city center might be thing to invest in.
