Wetlands Park could be national landmark - Feighan
Fine Gael TD for Roscommon/South Leitrim Frank Feighan has described as “very positive” last week’s meeting with Heritage Minister Jimmy Deenihan in which plans for an Irish National Wetlands Park to be located in counties Longford and Roscommon were discussed.
The recreational facility, which comprises of approximately 18,000 acres of bog covering several towns and villages including Strokestown, Tarmonbarry, Rooskey, Ballyeague and Roscommon town is envisaged to be a huge national and international attraction. The park, if given the go ahead is expected will be located on a large network of Bord na Mona bogs close to the areas mentioned.
Discussing the plans, Deputy Feighan said: “The areas of bog in question are divided into equal parts by the Shannon and are contained within a rectangle measuring 26 miles. Following last week’s meeting, Minister Deenihan has agreed to meet with members of Bord na Mona with a view to exploring all avenues in a bid to develop what I believe has the potential to become a national landmark.”
He noted the ideal transport infrastructure which runs close to the planned site, commenting: “The bogs in this network are interconnected by a narrow gauge railway and a network of excellent public roads.”
Mr Feighan also mentioned that the park would be used as a haven for bird watchers and described the area as a “treasure trove” for students and teachers of the natural sciences.
He concluded: “This is a very exciting development for Longford, Roscommon and the North Midlands and I believe it will be a tremendous tourism asset for the region.”
