Vacancy rates
remain high

Longford has one of the worst vacancy rates in the country despite new figures showing the number of ghost estates are beginning to fall.

A Department of the Environment report on ghost estates revealed a 30 per cent vacancy rate across the county, five per cent below the nation’s most problematic county, Leitrim. Cavan (26 per cent) and Roscommon (19 per cent) completed the top five of worst affected counties, while Westmeath fared marginally better (12 per cent).

In somewhat brighter findings, Longford failed to make the top ten parts of the county where ghost estates are most densely concentrated.

Despite a report unveiled by NUI Maynooth officials two years ago indicating the county boasted 19 unfinished developments, Longford failed to feature.

Assessors however, found 20 incomplete developments in Cavan, 12 of which are currently located in small south-east village of Mullagh.
