Two week extension to slurry spreading

The extension by two weeks to the spreading of slurry by the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government is a move that has been welcomed in farming quarters this week.

Simon Coveney TD, Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine affirmed last week that an extension had been granted for the spreading of chemical fertiliser and livestock manures to Wednesday, October 31 next.

“I had worked closely with Minister Hogan on these issues and was very pleased that the extensions now granted will be of benefit to farmers heading into the winter season,” the Minister declared. “The decision was taken in the context of an identified fodder shortage and these extensions will assist farmers in extending grazing into the winter season.”

Minister Coveney went on to say that he was acutely aware of the difficulties posed by the adverse weather conditions of this summer and indicated his “confidence” in the granting of the extension in the first instance.
