Local TD Robert Troy will host a public meeting in Rathowen this week on proposed reform of the Common Agriculture Policy (CAP), which will be attended by Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Agriculture, Food and Community Affairs Éamon Ó Cuív TD.

Deputy Troy commented: “I want to extend an invitation to farmers and members of the public with a strong interest and connection with the farming sector to this public meeting at 8pm in the Rathowen Community Centre tomorrow Thursday, January 24th.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Deputy Ó Cuív said the meeting is part of Fianna Fáil’s national campaign to protect Ireland’s funding under CAP. “We want to consult farmers in Longford and across the midlands about the major challenges they are facing at this time. This meeting in Rathowen gives us the opportunity to address the concerns of local farmers, many of whom are extremely worried about what’s coming down the line.”

Deputy Ó Cuív continued, “There must be no reduction in funding for the Common Agriculture Policy. It is crucial that this is nailed-down as a matter of urgency to end the state of uncertainty that’s plaguing Irish farming.”

Deputy Troy added: “Many farmers are still unaware of the alternatives and proposals being put forward and we will meet with farmers to inform them of the proposals while also seeking their input into the process. There are a lot of tough negotiations ahead on CAP and we need the Minister for Agriculture to fight hard for Ireland.

“Ordinary farmers in Longford and across the midlands should have an input in the direction that future policies should take.”
