Town Council to open doors to local businesses

Manufacturing chiefs and factory bosses from right across the greater Longford town area are being invited to a once off open evening by Longford Town Council in September.

The move forms part of a plan by the local authority to support businesses and employers in the face of an ever deepening recession.

Cllr Michael Connellan, who initially advocated the idea, said the event could provide a welcome boost to struggling firms.

“Obviously in the circumstances where we seem to be ignored by the IDA, I am proposing that we have an evening where we invite the employers of industrial plants throughout the town and its hinterlands to show that we are here to support them and assist them in any way we can,” he said.

The Longford town solicitor said it was imperative local stakeholders were shown the many benefits and supports that are available to them on their doorstep.

“We always seem to be discussing the loss of jobs and lack of respect we seem to be getting from the IDA so maybe it’s up to us to invite all of the employers who are creating crucial employment to our town,” he added.

“I think we need to show them that we are open for business.”

Cllr Paul Connell backed those calls, indicating the council might be best served by extending an invitation to Co Enterprise chief executive Michael Nevin and his staff.

Town Mayor Cllr Peggy Nolan said the proposition put forward by Cllr Connellan was especially timely given ongoing discussions to mark Irish cultural and tourism initiative-’The Gathering’ next year.

Cllr Nolan revealed councillors could play their part in the event’s preparation by travelling on a bus emblazoned with the tagline ‘Longford on the Move’ in October.

“We will be working flat out and there is a breakfast meeting,” she told the chamber ahead of the Irish Embassy visit to London.
