Strengthening agricultural relations within Europe
Ireland is expected to take over at the helm of the Presidency of the EU in January of next year and in preparation for the event, Minister for Agriculture, food and the Marine, Simon Coveney TD travelled to Germany, Italy and Hungary recently in an effort to build on agricultural relations between the four states.
“The CAP and CFP reform negotiations will be at a crucial stage in the first six months of next year and it is vitally important that, with the incoming presidency we reach a good understanding with other Member States of the key issues for them,” he explained.
“I have been listening carefully to what my colleagues in those member states and I also conveyed Ireland’s views on the main issues of importance to us in these negotiations.
“I am continuing to build up alliances with other member states in regard to the key issues of concern to Ireland and the meetings have presented an ideal opportunity to seek support for the Irish viewpoint.”
The meetings are the latest in a series of bilateral meetings that have been organised in conjunction with the agricultural ministers in Denmark, Cyprus, Lithuania, Spain, Portugal, France and the UK. The Minister has also held critical meetings with the EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Dacian Ciolos and Commissioner for Consumer Protection, John Dalli.
