NRA’s €5.9m for Longford roads

Longford County Council will receive a funding allocation of €5.9m from the National Roads Authority (NRA), the majority of which will be allocated towards the recently opened N5 bypass.
Speaking to the Leader about the allocation, local Fine Gael Deputy, James Bannon TD said, “The scheme that will benefit most in Co Longford will be the Longford bypass, as it has received a funding allocation of €5m.
“Longford’s Local Authority Support (Improvement) 2013 is to receive €153,143 as well as maintenance works funding to the tune of €233,054,” he added.
“Pavement and minor works in Longford will benefit by €200,000; bridge rehabilitation, €100,000 and safety measures €45,000. With regard to secondary [routes] maintenance – this will be funded by €416,737.”
Meanwhile, MEP Jim Higgins pointed to the benefits that an overall financial injection of €30m from the NRA for the region, would have.
“This year’s NRA allocation has road safety at its core, with funding awarded to local authorities in order to improve our road network,” he said, adding that Roscommon County Council had been awarded €21m - which included €16.5m for the completion of the Ballaghaderreen bypass. “Longford receives over €5m, while Co Leitrim local authority is due a total of €3,033,173.”
While he did express some disappointment over financial constraints that have led to a substantial drop in NRA capital expenditure nationwide, the local MEP did acknowledge the “efforts” made by local government and the NRA in their pursuit of road safety.
