No “long term” changes to Bord na Mona staff
The local area manager of Bord na Móna, covering Longford and parts of Roscommon, has told the Leader he expects there will be no “long-term” changes to the employment of seasonal staff in the region.
The news comes as Bord na Móna announced last week that 105 seasonal workers would not be employed over the winter months across the country in order to generate cost savings as the company grapples with its worst ever harvest.
A further 90 staff in the company are to be put on a short working week while there will also be redeployment of some full time staff.
Local area manager Danny Murray at Mountdillon said a small number of seasonal staff had been traditionally employed over the winter months in the transport side of the feedstock business. He said these gaps were likely to be plugged this year by a redeployment of full-time staff from other areas of the company.
Mr Murray couldn’t provide an exact figure on the number of people who would be affected but said it would be small.
Mr Murray said summer seasonal staff who had worked on the peat harvest – which remains at just 40 percent of the 2012 target – will finish up their contracts as normal in the coming weeks. However, Mr Murray said he expected the hiring of seasonal staff to resume as normal for next year’s harvest.
Mr Murray also expressed his confidence in delivering the contracted volumes of peat to the ESB, despite the poor harvest.
Last Thursday, the Chairman Designate of Bord na Móna, John Horgan told an Oireachtas committee the company was suffering from a “crisis” due to the bad harvest.
