Not a single overseas investor visited any of Co Longford’s IDA sponsored sites in 2012 or last year, new figures have shown.

In what is being seen as yet further evidence of the county’s lack of direct inward investment, Longford was the only county nationwide to remain bereft of interest from potential investors during that time.

The figures, which were released to the Leader by Fianna Fail TD Dara Calleary also revealed a net growth of five new jobs were created in 2013 by IDA client companies.

Reacting to those figures, Fine Gael TD James Bannon said the Government remained focused in addressing Longford’s unemployment problem.

“I have raised this (IDA site visits) with the Taoiseach and Richard Bruton (Minister for Jobs) on a continual basis and unless they are liars they have told me they are attemoting to rectify the situation,” he told the Business Leader on Tuesday.

Mr Bannon pointed to the success of initiatives like the Jobs Plus scheme and homing in on improving the county’s hotel infrastructure as a way of boosting Longford’s IDA potential.
