Longford start ups get behind ‘New Frontiers’ venture

Fourteen new entrepreneurs – including three from County Longford - have launched their fledgling businesses by becoming participants on New Frontiers 2012, an entrepreneur development programme funded and coordinated by Enterprise Ireland.
The programme, which is also delivered in the Midlands Mid-East region by Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT) in partnership with NUI Maynooth, provides entrants with a wide range of business skills in order to facilitate the initiation of a new enterprise.
All 14, alongside the three Longford businesses taking part in the initiative are knowledge-based with growth and export potential. Products being developed include mobile games, animal diagnostic kits, a construction machine and an online ‘brain training’ programme.
Michael Lonergan, Manager of the Midlands Innovation and Research Centre (MIRC), AIT said the new venture would allow participants access to numerous resources.
“Working closely with Enterprise Ireland, AIT and NUI Maynooth are strongly focused on increasing the number of new innovative high-growth export-focused companies in the Midlands Mid-East region,” he said.
“As well as the business development supports provided by New Frontiers, these start-ups will have full access to the research resources of AIT and NUI Maynooth to help them transform their concepts into products and services for international markets”.
Those sentiments were echoed by Dr Michael Brougham, Regional Director Enterprise Ireland.
“Increasing the number of new High Potential Start-Ups in the Midlands Mid-East region is a key objective for Enterprise Ireland. We are fully committed to working in partnership with the New Frontiers start-ups to help them build their capabilities and secure international market access for their products and services,” he added.
