The countdown to the Longford County Show and Country Fair is underway in earnest and preparations are in full swing for Saturday week’s (July 26) event which takes place on the lands of Seamus and Bernadette Farrell and family, Cloonkeen, Moydow.

The Sin Bin Event Centre played host to the show launch last Wednesday and Chairperson Charlie Murphy was fulsome in his praise of event sponsors, many of whom were represented. “Without you, our show would not survive,” declared Mr Murphy.

Secretary Bernie Whyte outlined details of the livestock classes that will feature at the show and she highlighted the very popular horse and pony jumping sections.

Ms Whyte reminded the attendance that all entries must be submitted by today Wednesday, July 16.

All livestock entries should be addressed to Bernie at Moyrath, Ardagh 087 6334313 and Craft entries to Cynthia Geelan, 11 Castle Gardens, Newtownforbes 087 1341139.

Craft Secretary Cynthia Geelan revealed that the art and craft section will be judged from 10.30am and open to the public by 12 noon.

There will be children’s entertainment from Candc Inflatables, Bozo the magician, pets corner and free kids games and also the hugely popular dog show that takes place at 1pm sharp.

Ms Geelan explained that there will be live music from Cheap Whiskey and Irish dancing with a twist by Celtic Blondes beside the tented bar. “All this should provide great entertainment,” she enthused.

She also paid tribute to the ICA ladies who run an excellent tent. “Their home made cakes and buns are delicious and I urge show goers to sample these delights and enjoy a cuppa and a chat.”

Longford County Council Cathaoirleach Mark Casey and Cllr Paul Ross also spoke at the launch and they wished the show committee the very best of luck and expressed the hope that the sun will be shining on the day.

Admission to the show is €10 and kids are free. For more visit www.longfordshow.ie
