With few late night venues operating in Longford town, the number of locals choosing to travel to Carrick-on-Shannon to socialise at the weekends is increasing.
One local bar JP Reilly’s has started offering customers discounts on a bus to the Co Leitrim town, which departs from outside the pub on Richmond St on Saturday nights.
“The return fare to Carrick is €15 and customers receive a discount of €1.50 on this with every drink they buy,” said the pub’s proprieter, JP Reilly.
Chairman of the local VFI branch, John Duignan, said the situation for publicans is worsening.
“People are leaving town because the only late bar appeals to a slightly older crowd and younger people have nowhere to go.”
However, he claimed local publicans should not be encouraging the exodus, adding that,“Longford’s pubs still have a lot to offer” - a point JP Reilly countered by saying, “I’m not really encouraging them because they’re going to go anyway.”
