Six companies are to travel to the UK tomorrow (Thursday) to assure prospective investors over Longford’s attractiveness as a business location.

Several high profile public figures from across the county are also expected to be in attendance at the Irish Embassy in London as part of The Gathering 2013-a major tourist drive designed to encourage visits to Ireland.

All six are expected to meet officials from Enterprise Ireland while also rubbing shoulders with leading London based firms about how to break into the lucrative UK market.

One of the half dozen of locally based firms in attendance include timber processing firm Glennon Brothers, whose joint managing director Pat Glennon will address over 100 dintinguished guests on behalf of the local business community.

One of the driving forces behind the event, Longford Town Mayor, Cllr Peggy Nolan, said the occasion presented an ideal opportunity to showcase all that is good about Co Longford.

“There has been a sub committee that has been working hard on this for some time now,” she pointed out ahead of the two hour networking event.

“In the period of three years not one company was brought to Longford. We have to do this for ourselves and this entire event is the perfect way to promote a county that for too long was forgotten about.”

Alongside a number of local representatives, Cllr Nolan will be joined by Minister for State Michael Ring and the Irish Ambassador to London, Bobby McDonagh.

In praising the input given by the London print based media in promoting the event, Cllr Nolan rebuffed any suggestions the trip was another cross-party political junket.

“Anyone who is travelling, are doing so at their own expense. It is very much a self-financing effort. This is an unbelievable opportunity for job creation, tourism and for the town and county as a whole,” she added.

The seminar follows on from a hugely successful public brain storming meeting held earlier this month in Longford town, an event which organisers hope will form the basis for Longford’s 2013 Gathering campaign.
