The Longford Community Resources Networking Event and Seminar, held in the Longford Arms Hotel on Wednesday 31st October 2012, was a great success, with almost 100 people in attendance.
The key note speaker at the event was blind and recently paralysed adventurer, Mark Pollock, who spoke at length to the audience about his many adventures to date, including completing six marathons in seven days in the Gobi Desert and becoming the first blind person to cross the South Pole. In outlining his achievements to date, Mark was successful in inspiring, motivating and enthralling his audience, comprising people from both the business as well as the community sector. His speech focused on a number of key issues including the importance of ambition, breaking the mould, overcoming difficulties and generally making the best of one’s situation, whatever that may be.
The event also featured presentations by LCRL, about LEADER/RDP funding, in which the issues of eligibility, accessibility and funding rates were addressed in detail. In addition, a number of project promoters, who have successfully drawn down LEADER/RDP funding, spoke about their own projects and their experience of the grant funding process in the context of helping with the development of these projects. The four speakers were Seadna Ryan, Lanesboro Tourism Cooperative Society Ltd, Alex Stanley, Outdoor Discovery Ltd, Mark Costello, Abbeyshrule Tidy Villages Association and Eileen Finan, Lus Na Greine Family Resource Centre.
Finally, a number of other project promoters, groups and individuals, that have already been through the LEADER/RDP funding process, came along and showcased their businesses or their community projects, whether in the form of products, banner stands or other related marketing materials, thereby providing an excellent networking opportunity for all.

Gerry Doherty, RDP Coordinator, said: “We were delighted with the turnout at this networking event and to receive such positive feedback from those that were in attendance; there is no doubt that Mark Pollock was an inspiration to all and was a great success as the keynote speaker. We would like to thank everyone that came along on the day and hope that such a positive event will lead to the development of new projects from both the business and community sectors.”
