A new departure for Longford Women’s Link (LWL) will see the organisation running a journalism course this autumn.

The certificate in ‘News Journalism’ accredited by the Irish Academy of Public Relations will teach participants to write news stories, feature articles and colour pieces as well as how to conduct interviews.

“It covers a wide range of topics and participants will learn how to research, keep contacts books and find sources of information,” said Pamela Latimer, LWL. “They will also learn about journalistic codes of ethics, the power of language and important legal areas including defamation.”

Spearheaded by local political commentator Johnny Fallon who will tutor participants, LWL anticipates that upon graduation, students of the course will have obtained a wide range of “marketable skills”.

“This course will appeal to men and women and brings with it some very marketable skills,” Ms Latimer continued. “These skills cannot only be used in print and online media, but also in television, magazines, blogs, speech writing, book reviews and annual reports. We also believe that these skills will work very well in a business environment. It will certainly open a lot of doors for people.”

The course takes place over 10 weeks, on Wednesday nights between September 24 and November 26, 2014 from 7-9pm. Areas covered include Journalism; How the media works; Ethics & Issues; Use of Language; News Reporting; Compiling and Editing Newsletters; Feature Articles; Interviewing Skills; Revision & examination.

Examination is by written exam on the final night and results will be available six to eight later. Cost is €390 with a €100 non refundable deposit required to secure a place. Full course fees should be paid prior to the start of the course which is limited to 12 participants.
