Iceland move suffers setback

Plans by discount supermarket chain, Iceland to expand its growing portfolio base to Co Longford has suffered a setback, the Leader has learned.

Chief executive of the AIM Group, which holds the franchise for Iceland said the company was nonetheless still keen on setting up operations in Co Longford.

“Yes there is truth behind the claims that you refer to,” Mr Keogh told the Leader on Tuesday morning. “However for various reasons this particular project has encountered delays. While this is the case, it is still very much our intention to bring business to Longford.”

Last December, the Leader revealed how the food retailer had set its sights on opening two new stores in Longford.

The talks, involving local Cllr Peggy Nolan, also led Mr Keogh to heap praise on the long standing Fine Gael representative this week.

“She (Cllr Nolan) has been extremely pro-active and continues to be in bringing jobs to the Longford region and has been very helpful,” he added.
