A crowd of around 70 people, all with the surname ‘Fallon’ turned out at a special Gathering event last Wednesday as work on the country’s year-long tourism initiative stepped up a gear.

One of those who travelled to the Co Roscommon town of Dysart was Ballymahon man Albert Fallon.

Reflecting on the night and build up to the Fallon Family’s two day celebrations in late September, the former County Board GAA chairman said the evening couldn’t have gone much better.

“Anybody who has the Fallon name was invited along. A lot of work has gone into it and a brochure has also been produced,” he said.

Stopping to reveal a number of his own extended relations were among the horde of interested spectators, Mr Fallon said he wasn’t overly surprised by the large attendance.

“It’s (Fallon name) the fifth most popular name in Roscommon,” he cheerfully remarked.

Attention now meanwhile, switches to September 28 and 29, part of which includes a special banquet for the Fallon clan inside the confines of Athlone’s Hodson Bay Hotel.

Those festivities form just one of around 1,700 events being staged nationwide this year by local families, community groups and organisations to encourage overseas visitors to visit Irish shores.
