Drumlish tiler ‘delighted’ to feature in UK magazine

A north Longford tiler is celebrating this week after his exploits were featured in a top UK based magazine.

Eamon Connell is no stranger to the local construction industry with around a decade and a half of experience behind him.

But even he was surprised to learn that publishers of ‘25 beautiful homes’ had decided to showcase his work inside a 1930s Dublin based property in its February edition.

“I got a call from the owners of a house in Crumlin where I had done some work in, saying that the house was in this magazine. It was a nice call to get,” said the sole trader who originates from nearby Ballinamuck.

Surprised and delighted in equal measure, Eamon is still puzzled as to what may have prompted the magazine to illustrate his work.

“It wasn’t as if it was a huge house, it’s detached and has two bedrooms,” he said.

One bone of contention the Drumlish based father-of-four does have surrounds the absence of his name from the magazine’s accompanying photographs.

“That’s the problem,” he admitted. “How are people going to identify with it or know that it was me that did the tiling?”

Casting that disappointment aside, Eamon is nonetheless keeping his fingers crossed further successes may just be around the corner.

Whether that transpires or not is for another day. For the time being, Eamon is focusing all his thoughts and time on furthering his own business at a time when the wider construction industry continues to struggle.

“Things are tough alright, but we are getting work and to be honest most of that is through word of mouth. What we have always done is to take on all jobs, even the small ones. It might only be for p100 but we will still do it.”

A useful reminder, perhaps, that the recession can throw up ways of innovative business survival planning despite all the negativity.
