Campaign against household and water charges launched in Longford

Over 150 people attending a meeting of the Campaign Against Household and Water Charges (CAHWT) in the Longford Arms Hotel on Tuesday night said they would not be registering for the €100 household charge.
The CAHWT have organised meetings throughout the country in the last number of weeks in protest at the introduction of the household tax as well as water and septic tank charges.
A number of local people agreed to distribute the 4,500 newsletters earmarked for Longford county, as well as forming an action group to organise further protests.
The meeting was organised by the national steering group of the CAHWT, with People Before Profit Alliance TD, Joan Collins addressing the crowd. Mrs Collins told the Leader she was standing in solidarity with people in this country who can not afford to pay these new charges.
“This comes about because of a culmination of all the other taxes that have hit us and people just feel like they’ve been cut to the bone. Unlike other taxes, this is the first time people have been voluntarily asked to pay.
“The universal social charge, pension levies and pay cuts have all been taken from us at source but what we’re saying to people here is: they do have a choice. Don’t register and don’t pay,” the Dublin South-Central TD said.
Councillor Mark Casey, the only local representative in attendance, was extremely happy with the turnout. “Longford has a total population of thirty thousand, there’s 150 people here tonight – that’s one percent of the population at this meeting.
“If everyone here brought 10 people to the next get-together that’s 10% of the county and then we’ve really got a strong movement on our hands,” the independent councillor remarked.
