British frozen food giant steps closer to Longford

British frozen food chain Iceland is expected to sign the lease on a premises in Longford town this week, the Leader has learned.

Speculation was rife on Tuesday morning that the contracts were due to be signed later in the day. It is understood that the premises is located close to Aldi along Longford town’s Killashee Street.

Iceland’s move to establish itself in Longford has been on the cards for the best part of a year. However, amid numerous ups and downs during that time, it now finally looks likely that there will be an Iceland in Co Longford within weeks.

“I was told last week that contracts would be signed this week and I am absolutely delighted,” Cllr Peggy Nolan (FG) said. “Longford’s persistence on this issue has finally paid off and I want to thank Tom Keogh, CEO Iceland, Ireland who has been extremely supportive.”

Meanwhile, Longford Chamber of Commerce President, Seamus Butler said that while he welcomed new business to Longford, it was the Chamber’s belief that the retail sector in the county town was adequately served.

“When new business comes here, it is a vote of confidence in our town,” Mr Butler continued. “Iceland has had it ups and downs over the past few years, but Longford Chamber of Commerce wishes them, the very best here in the town, and we are delighted to have them on board. Longford is very well served in the retail side of things.”
