Ballymahon teacher highlights World Home Economics Day
Ballymahon teacher, Jenny Cooney, is one of the main drivers behind the World Home Economics Day which takes place across Irish schools on Thursday.
A teacher at Ballinamore Community School in Co Leitrim, Jenny is also the current President of ATHE (Association of Teachers of Home Economics) and the organisation seeks to promote the importance and relevance of Home Economics as a subject to the public.
To link in with World Home Economics Day many teachers are holding a themed Healthy Living Week event in local schools this week. Jenny’s father, Michael, and the Cooney family, run the well known Cooney’s Hotel in Ballymahon. She told the Leader that World Economics Day has a very important message and explained that it is about: “Empowering Individuals, Families and Communities through Home Economics: Confront Poverty and Social Exclusion.”
Added Jenny: “Individuals, families and households, are the basic and core units of societies and economies. The functions of families and households are multifaceted and wide ranging. They serve the needs of their internal members and influence the economics, political and social framework of societies to meet their demands and needs.”
A knowledge of Home Economics can strengthen and empower individuals and families. Home Economics education is recognised as the most important precondition for families and households to improve their lives and to prevent poverty. To support people living in poverty and to reduce social exclusion Home Economists around the world advise families and individuals.
