Agri relations strengthen

A new agreement which will see new agri relations develop between Ireland and South Africa was reached last week. The move will now allow for the exportation of sheepmeat from this country and create a subsequent positive impact on the sector here.

Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney TD who spoke last week on the matter said that an agreement which has been reached with the veterinary authorities in South Africa and would allow for the exportation of sheepmeat from Ireland to South Africa.

“This agreement was reached following consultations between my department, the Irish Embassy in South Africa and the South African authorities and is a reflection of the strong rapport and trust between the agricultural and veterinary authorities of both countries,” he added. “This agreement means that Ireland now has access to the very valuable South African market for all meats including beef, pork, poultrymeat and sheepmeat, all of which should provide Irish exporters with increased market opportunities.”

Minister Coveney added that while the vast bulk of Irish sheepmeat was exported to the EU, interest was increasing in relation to its expansion into other world markets.
