Pensioners to march on Dáil tomorrow.

Pensioners are protesting the latest round of budget cuts

Senior citizens from Longford will join others from around the country in a protest outside Dáil Éireann at lunchtime tomorrow.

The protest, which has been organised by the Irish Senior Citizens Parliament, is scheduled to begin at 1pm. According to the organisers, it has been convened to voice opposition at the “attacks on senior citizens in Budget 2014”, and will take place five years to the day since a similar march attracted 15,000 pensioners and 10,000 students to oppose to cuts in the Emergency Budget in 2008.

Some of the cuts to affect the elderly in the latest budget announced by Finance Minister Michael Noonan last week include lowering the qualifying threshold for medical cards, increasing the prescription charge to €2.50, and the abolition of the bereavement grant.
