Much of the talk over the past few weeks, and ever since the Government’s planned two per cent increase in the top rate of VAT was embarrassingly leaked from the German Bundestag, has been on what impact this may have locally.

Concerns a further hike in excise duty has led some experts to forewarn the country could be facing another flood of cross-border shopping, leading to massive job losses and business closures south of the border.
