The adverse weather over the past few weeks has brought additional problems for farmers according to the IFA.
Longford IFA County Chairperson, Andrew McHugh said the weather was “extreme†and pointed to the difficulties many farm families across the country were experiencing since it began.
Mr McHugh told the ‘Longford Leader’, “With the start of the lambing and calving season, the weather is making conditions for farm families around the country very difficult.â€
He added, “Saturated land means that all livestock have to be housed for some time yet, and there is an inevitable increase in workload and costs as a result.â€
The local chairperson also pointed to the need for community spirit in these times and and the importance of keeping a positive outlook despite the difficulties. “A strong community spirit exists in rural Ireland, and I would encourage farm families to look out for each other. I would appeal to them to check in on elderly neighbours in particular.â€
