As the Dáil debates a Tax Transparency Bill, which aims to give Irish taxpayers an annual account of how their taxes are spent, RTE’s George Lee meets Irish families wondering where their tax money goes and what they get in return in a TV documentary to be broadcast on Monday next, November 26, at 9.35pm on RTE One.

Among those to feature on the show is Michelle McCaffrey, a clerical officer in the Department of Social Protection in Longford. Over the past few years she has undergone pay cuts, tax increases and her workload has increased significantly. Since the introduction of the Universal Social Charge she has had to take up a second job in a bar to meet her mortgage repayments. Michelle wants to know how much of the tax she contributes goes towards servicing bank bailout payments.

In the lead up to the 2012 Budget, George Lee tries to find out where your tax euros go once they leave people’s wallet/purse.
