Another day, and another jobs boost for Longford town with discount chain €urogiant announcing plans to create around 15 new jobs.
The Leader can exclusively reveal work on the new 9,000 sq ft premises at the N$ Axis Centre is already underway ahead of its official opening on September 28.
Project Manager Paul Kelly said the decision to set up on the outskirts of Longford town was largely due to the N4 Axis centre’s ever increasing footfall.
“That was definitely one reason,” he said. “Another was the size of the store. Most of our stores are in or around 2,000 sq ft, but in the last two years or so we have been going into bigger stores so this fits perfectly with that.”
The store itself, which is presently undergoing extensive refitting, is made up of two adjacent units beside car parts and bike retailer Halford’s.
Mr Kelly admitted the firm had looked at other locations, but in the end opted for the N4 Axis Centre.
Widely regarded as being one of Ireland’s largest value retailers, €urogiant also boasts a sister store along Longford town’s Main Street under its €uro2 brand.
“We have a shop already in Longford, but this will be far enough away that it won’t affect things,” he said.
News of €urogiant’s planned expansion comes hot on the heels of fellow retail chains, Iceland and Shaws announcing their own plans to open stores in Longford.
