The Government has been urged to undertake a radical overhaul of the country’s commercial rates system by Longford County Councilor Padraig Loughrey.
The Longford town pharmacist branded the present system as “outdated” and “grossly unfair” so much so that it is causing added pressure to already pressurised businesses.
“Action must be taken by the Government to prevent the ongoing damage to business and jobs that is a direct consequence of problems with the rates system,” he said.
Cllr Loughrey said he couldn’t understand why government leaders haven’t made alterations to a system which dates back hundreds of years.
“Small business in particular are struggling under this punitive system,” he said. “Many promises were made but the time has now come for action as the model is no longer sustainable and it must now be a priority.”
