Unemployment rates may be continuing to slide, but our economic problems are far from over.
That’s according to Chamber of Commerce President Seamus Butler as he reacted to last week’s confirmation jobless figures were now at a three-and-a-half-year low.
Mr Butler said one of the main factors behind Longford and other counties’ turnaround in labour market figures was largely due to emigration.
“Anecdotally, you would have to say our figures would be worse if we didn’t have the safety valve of emigration,” he said.
Despite an apparent upturn in export led demand, Mr Butler said both retail and construction industries were continuing struggle.
“We need some sort of stimulus package,” he said.
