Padraig McNamara, The Irish Postmaster’s Union (IPU) representative for Longford, has welcomed the decision to award An Post another contract to provide over the counter cash transactions.

The decision, made by the Department of Social Protection and Minister Joan Burton, TD, will see An Post’s contract renewed for 2 years, with a possible extension afterwards.

Though he admits that the news is heartening to Postmasters, their staff and customers, Mr McNamara realises that this contract will not keep the Post Offices safe, saying “Another tender is to be issued soon that could spell the death-knell to some 400 Post Offices throughout the country, many of them in Longford.”
