Bannon comes out strongly against abortion

Legan TD James Bannon has vowed to fight to ensure abortion is never legalised in Ireland

Longford/Westmeath Fine Geal TD James Bannon said he “will never vote to legislate for abortion in Ireland” on Matt Cooper’s Last Word show on Today FM on Monday evening.

Cooper asked Bannon whether he wanted to see the law, which currently allows for abortion in cases where the mother life is deemed to be in danger, clarified in the future. However, the Legan TD said the state and the European courts were “not the last word or supreme on this issue. Natural law, or God’s law, and I believe in God, state clearly to me ‘Thou shalt not kill.’”

Bannon said that to him “abortion is murder” and highlighted instances in other countries where abortions were carried out on the basis of “gender, or even minor imperfections.” He said moves to allow termination in certain circumstances in other countries had often “very rapidly” led to a situation of “abortion on demand.”

He acknowledged his views would “not be popular in certain government circles” but insisted he was “morally unable to support any legislation that threatens the life of an unborn child.”

Labour Senator Ivana Bacik, also appearing on the programme, said the reference to “God’s law” took us into “very dangerous territory in terms of theocracy.” She said, in her estimation, most people did not consider abortion to be such a “black and white issue.”
