Ballymahon Convent tops Longford third level list

The Convent of Mercy in Ballymahon seen the highest percentage of Leaving Cert students go to third level in the county in 2011, according to the School League Tables published in the Irish Times yesterday, Tuesday. The league table shows that 91% of students in the Convent of Mercy’s Class of 2011 went on to third level. The majority of the 81 students went to Athlone IT, 17 in total.
According to the figures, Cnoc Mhuire in Granard is second on the list with 89% of students going to third level. The highest proportion of the 66 students in Leaving Cert this year went to DIT, 10 students in total. Third on the list is St Mel’s College Longford which sent 88% of its 101 students going to third level education. The highest preference for St Mel’s students was UCD with 18 students in all progressing on to the university.
In fourth place was Mean Scoil Mhuire in Longford town which saw 81% of its 95 students progressing to third level. Athlone IT was the preferred third level institution for Scoil Mhuire students with 22 students in all going there. According to the statistics released yesterday, 69% of Moyne Community School Leaving Certs went on to third level this year while 68% of the Leaving Cert class in Ballymahon Vocational School took up third level places. A total of 55% of Lanesboro Communtiy College students progressed to third level, compared to 47% of Ardcoil Phadraig Leaving Certs and 30% of pupils from Templemichael College
