The Ballinalee National school’s entry, entitled ‘Does food colour affect the shelf life of food?’, undertaken by 6th year pupils at the school and overseen by their teacher Laura Gannon, looked into the reasons why some foods have shorter sell and use by dates than others.

The study aimed to answer two questions: ‘Does the colour of food affect how long it lasts?’ and ‘Does the colour of a sweet affect how long they will last in your mouth?’

Sixth class pupils tested different coloured sweets to see which lasts longer when sucked.

They then examined the results and created graphs to illustrate the results.

The group showcased their findings at this year’s exhibition and are looking forward to entering further projects in such events in the future.
