Abbeyshrule shone in all her glory last Saturday as President Michael D Higgins strolled into town against the backdrop of the Royal Canal.
The president was there to honour the village, which last year secured the tidiest town in Ireland accolade and Gold Medal in the Entente Florale European competition. “This was a huge achievement for us and it has been something that we as a committee have been working towards for the last 30 years,” Marie Mullen, Abbeyshrule Tidy Towns Committee said. “Abbeyshrule is a small community of about 200 people and is made up of agriculture and industry. To have President Higgins here today is wonderful, and it also provides us with an opportunity to showcase our beautiful village - something that the whole communtiy has worked together on.” Abbeyshrule Tidy Towns Committee is planning on bettering the achivements of late, and now working on a three-year-plan.
