The Arts Services of Longford, Laois, Offaly and Westmeath County Councils have combined their efforts to offer a region-wide series of professional development master classes to midland artists.

The Longford master classes this year are organised in partnership with the Midland College of Photography and therefore there will be three concurrent day-long master classes in different elements of photography in Templemichael College Longford on Saturday next, September 24th.

Telling a Story Through Photographs - is the title of the class given by experienced International photographer Andy Mason. Before the advent of television, magazines such as “Life” were the media through which a (news) story could be told.

During this Master Class the participants will be given an overview of several important Photo Essays. A guideline will be given on how to approach such an essay together with some technical tips.

Each participant will photograph a small essay. The results will be discussed in the class. The process of selecting the “best” photos for the essay will take place during the afternoon resulting in a series of essays.

This master class is intended for people with a reasonable amount of photography experience.

The professional photographer and television producer Brian Flanagan will give a master class in outdoor photography under the title of Architectural and Industrial Photography.

This course examines the cameras and materials necessary for photographing new and historic structures, their locations, exteriors and interiors.

The course is aimed at intermediate level non-professional photographers who want to improve their knowledge of natural, available and controlled lighting techniques.

Topics will include the zone system, product photography (such as reflective surfaces), technical cameras and the right equipment for different jobs.

The final master class will be on the ever-popular topic – the portrait. Entitled simply “The Face”, this intermediate level class will be delivered by the popular Longford professional photographer and photography teacher Shelley Corcoran.

This lesson is designed for photographers that want a better understanding of portrait lighting patterns and posing techniques and will deal with such subjects as, an introduction to portrait lighting, lighting variations, posing both children and adults.

The lesson will cover using available/natural light and also studio lighting and equipment such as soft boxes, kill spills, reflectors.
