This week Leitrim man Breifne Earley stopped off in Longford town en route to a potentially record breaking trek across 25 countries.

Over the course of the next four months, Breifne plans to cover 18,000 miles in an effort to raise awareness surrounding suicide prevention.

As its online name ChallengeTen.com would suggest, the task has seen the Leitrim native pick ten individual challenges, pursuing each of them over the course of an energy sapping 13 month period.

“Three years ago, I was depressed, lonely, very single, severely overweight, unhappy in work and having regular suicidal thoughts,” said Breifne.

“I decided I needed to sort my life out.”

Among them included losing weight, travelling, learning live skills such as swimming and cooking, overcoming a fear of performing in public, changing jobs, finding a partner and completing a series of sporting events ranging from duathlons to triathlons and open water swims.

Last Saturday heralded the start of Breifne’s latest crusade ahead of a second leg from London to Istanbul.
