The August Bank Holiday is almost upon us, and many are making the all-important decision about how to spend the long weekend.
To make that decision a bit easier, the following is a list of events taking place throughout the region.
Friday, July 26 – Monday, August 5: Arva 3 Province Festival, with events including: “A Marriage of Connivance”, the annual Breffni Challenge, Street Busking, Old Fair Day, fireworks display, sports day and dancing. For more information, search for Arva 3 Province Festival on Facebook and Twitter.
Thursday, August 1 – Wednesday, August 7: The Patsy Farrell Festival. A festival to commemorate the life and works of the late Rathowen and Legan-based singer-songwriter. Over 20 music sessions will be held across 11 towns and villages in Longford and Westmeath throughout the festival. Officially launched in Feerick’s Hotel, Rathowen on Thursday, August 1. All musicians and dancers welcome.
Thursday, August 1: Table Quiz Fundraiser for the Free Fringe Festival will take place in Smyth’s, Ballinamore at 9.30pm. €20 for table of 4.
Friday, August 2: Drumsna CCE are hosting a function in McLoughlin’s Drumsna in support of Leitrim Rose, Edwina Guckian.
Friday, August 2: Open Session with Liam Fagan in Mitchell’s Bar, Legan.
Friday, August 2 - Sunday, August 4: Lanesborough Gathering Festival 2013. Events include: exhibitions, historical readings, a fishing competition, tours, music by Brendan Bowyer, Storyhorse and Knights of Leon, Gathering Mass, Vintage Car Rally, Boats in the bay and family entertainment. Friday, August 2, Saturday, August 3: Foigha/Kenagh Royal Canal Gathering.
Saturday, August 3: Castlepollard Credit Union draw at 1.15pm at the Credit Union offices on the Square. Prize fund of €20,000 on offer, first prize is €10,000.
Saturday, August 3, Sunday, August 4: Tractor Run from Letterkenny to Donegal, to Granard in aid of Diabetes Ireland. For further information, contact Tom on 086 8656390.
Saturday, August 3: Family Fun Day in Murray’s, Maghera to wish Tang girl Aisling good luck in the Dome. Beginning at 5pm, events on the day include: face painting, fun and games, barbeque, local talent showcase, Lovely Ladies competition and karaoke.
Sunday, August 4: Granard girl Emma Regan has volunteered for two weeks’ work in a South African orphanage in September with Global Vision International. Emma will be embarking on a number of fundraisers, including one in the Crossroads Inn, Lisryan, on Sunday, August 4. Local bands Paper Planes and Mary Willis and band will provide the entertainment.
Sunday, August 4: Music by Low Mileage in Mitchell’s Bar, Legan.
Sunday, August 4: Granard will celebrate the Gathering with a fun-filled field day in the Higginstown Sports Complex, with novelty events, children’s entertainment and a special vintage display on the day. Admission is free.
Sunday, August 4: St Columba’s GFC will hold their annual Party in the Park with live music, family fun, bar and barbecue.
Sunday, August 4: As part of the Gathering, St Thomas’ Church of Ireland will host a service at 3pm, with a history of Columbkille church, hyms, readings and music, followed by refreshments in the church grounds.
Sunday, August 4: Mostrim and District annual charity Tractor Run
Sunday, August 4: Old Forge Killoe Gathering.
Sunday, August 4: Direct from TV appearance of Hot County, Colm Burke will appear in the Camlin Lounge, Clondra.
Sunday, August 4: The Gathering Barbeque takes place in The Quarry Park, Newtowncashel. Music by local artists and Oceans Eleven. Food, fun, games and face painting on the day.
Sunday, August 4: Loch Gowna/Upper Anglers will host an Open Boat Pike fishing competition from 11am to 5pm on Dernaferst lake.

August Bank Holiday Weekend: Carrigallen Summer Festival. This year’s festival promises to be exciting with a number of new activities and events including pig races and soap box racing.
